Mexican Consulate to participate in news conference Friday to
unveil campaign to help abused, sexually harassed Latino grocery
workers
SAN JOSE – The Mexican General Consulate will be among
those participating in a major news conference here Friday to
disclose evidence of wholesale abuse of Latino workers in hundreds –
and perhaps thousands – of small and medium size grocery stores
throughout the Bay Area and California.
A NEWS CONFERENCE to unveil the launch of a campaign to
help workers will be held FRIDAY, 10:30 a.m., 240 South Market
Street.

Tom
Alexander, political director, UFCW Local 5 with
other speakers and workers at news conference.
In addition to the Mexican General Consulate, labor unions,
community groups and elected officials are participating in the
campaign to provide relief for the workers – some of whom will be
present at the news conference.
An investigation has revealed that workers are abused, sexually
harassed, not paid for overtime, or the minimum wage – and sometimes
not paid at all – at grocery stores known as "Mercados," which
operate in immigrant communities.
Among those participating in the campaign are the League of
United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), Association of Community
Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), California Healthy Communities
Network (CALHCN), Instituto Laboral de la Raza, Proyecto de
Ciudadanía de Salinas; and Local 5.
